We take great strides to ensure a low-stress environment for our calves during weaning, which begins 45 days prior to transport. We monitor and control conditions in various ways, including playing country music to minimize distractions and visits by the mother cows. These techniques provide a gradual and gentle transition that reduces stress, promotes consistent and steady weight gain and maintains a healthy herd.
All Natural beef
Our beef is free of any additives or growth-hormones enhancements and we've been verified by several, independent programs. We are:
-
Part of the Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC) Program,
-
Source & Age certified, verified by IMI Global
Superior Genetics
We selectively breed and introduce the very best genetics. We are glad to feature registered, Angus bulls in our herd, from Leachman Cattle of Colorado. The genetics in these bulls are known for their Expected Progeny Differences (genetic value) and they've been found to not only perform exceptionally well in the tender, desert climate of our area, but also produce a consistent, high profit calf.
Low-stess Animal Handling
We are a progressive lot, having evolved from the 'Wild, Wild West' days of buffalo commons and unregulated livestock stocking. Our beef are raised in a stress-free environment, worked on foot in the corral and no ropes allowed, except on the occasional rogue calf "feeling his oats". Our animals are treated with respect. The boss likes to take things "nice n' easy" when we gather and work our cattle.
Grass Fed
Our calves are raised on the native grasses of Southwestern New Mexico and provided free choice minerals, salts, and liquid supplements, as needed. Our livestock grow strong and robust under the blue skies and fresh New Mexico air!
Frequently Asked Questions
It's important to us that we produce high-quality beef. This is where you can learn about all of our Quality and Safety control programs.
How does Keeler beef grade?
Retained calves have graded 100% Choice (or better) and 60% Certified Angus Beef and Prime! Click here see our Grading Sheet.
What is Natural Verified Beef (NVB)?
Keeler Ranch participates in the Natural Verified Beef program. This program ensures that all supplemental feeds fed to our livestock conform to federal and state guidelines and are hormone and antibiotic free.
Third-party verification programs, such as IMI Global, are the vehicle by which producers, growers, feeders and finishers are able to meet specific export or private brand label requirements as they relate to live animal production practices and procedures. Click here to see our Program Verification Certificate.
Source & Age Verification program is a USDA approved, non-biased, third-party audit that verifies the source and age of your calves. The source verification has allowed us to meet COOL requirements, the age verification makes our cattle eligible for export to countries with age requirements on imported beef products. Both of these add value to our cattle at sale time.

What are Non-Hormone treated cattle (NHTC)?
Keeler beef calves are raised on the native grasslands of Southwestern New Mexico. Hormones are never administered, nor are they even kept on the ranch. Because of the progressive nature of our breeding program, hormones are just not necessary.
What is the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program?
To become BQA certified, every year beef producers are required to attend 6 hours of continuing education classes. These classes are designed and taught by the best and brightest professors, veterinarians and producers. This helps the New Mexico beef producers adapt to the changing demands of the beef industry, including; consumer expectations; proper care and husbandry of livestock; low-stress handling of animals; vaccine handling protocols and more.
